CHASSIS

Objective

Lead the design and manufacturing of a Formula SAE chassis capable of impact loads, rollover loads, combustion engine loads, and dynamic vehicle loads.

Process

  • Coordinated with Dassault Systèmes to sponsor 40 free SOLIDWORKS licenses 
  • Managing chassis design to meet FSAE regulations
  • FEA analysis and complex modeling techniques
  • Managing and leading a 200+ hr fabrication job included machining and welding
  • Found sponsors to help pay for the chassis construction

Results

Completed a fully constructed chassis meeting regulations to be used in a completed car.

Improvement Opportunities

  • Choose tubing that is less likely to be burned through in welding
  • Design a rig for tubing to reduce overall tolerance
  • Better integrations of car systems into the chassis

What I Learned

  • Theoretical designs need to be feasible, and how to design for that 
  • Make your designs built to function together like legos
  • Practical usage of Finite Element Analysis 
  • How to manage a large set of regulations in a design
