Objective

Design a structural element for the rear to support a drivetrain and suspension.

Modular LAdder

Objective

Design, simulation, and optimization of a modular, ultralight ladder design capable of being climbed and walked across.

Process

  • Cyclical loading analysis

  • Material research and operating condition research 

Results

  • Completed a design capable of fitting in a standard backpack, withstanding a 95th percentile male, and extending beyond 8 feet.

Improvement Opportunities

  • Redesign fiber composite components to reduce manufacturing complexity
  • Redesign structural cross-sections for a better moment of inertia

What I Learned

  • How to research use cases for a product and plan for misuse
  • Material selection and how materials change part design

Modular Ladder

Objective

Design and optimize a small hydroelectric turbine for a dam.

Process

  • Analyzed flow of water
  • Analyzed blade angles of stator and turbine blades

Results

  • Designed a small turbine with stators to handle hydroelectric dam flow 

Improvement Opportunities

  • Optimization of fin count using current turbomachinery knowledge
  • CFD analysis

  • Basic turbomachinery applications of theoretical knowledge

AUTOCAD ROLLER ASSEMBLY

Objective

Draw an AutoCAD assembly of a roller mechanism.

  • Translating flat view drawings of parts into an isometric 
  • Combining isometric drawings into an assembly

  • Creating flat view drawings of parts

Results

  • Completed an AutoCAD assembly of a structural roller

  • Drawings could use better scaled elements and colors
