Yearbook for the blind

Objective

Help a team create a yearbook of 3D printed scans of blind students such that they can feel the scanned faces of their fellow classmates.

Process

  • Using a device with infrared and optical cameras, individuals were scanned with thousands of vertices being combined
  • Students were taught how to clean models with MeshMixer
  • Students were taught 3D printing preparation with Creality slicer

Results

A page of faces was given to a local Korean blind school, with many students interacting with the yearbook. As well, the showcase event was broadcasted on news networks, allowing the team to further spread awareness about the human rights advocacy for North Koreans.

Improvement Opportunities

  • Streamline the model cleanup process to create consistent models
  • Create example videos to help reinforce concepts

What I Learned

  • Turning roughly scanned models into functional ones
  • 3D printing and scanning
  • Introduction to teaching technical concepts
  • Designing for others with different lifestyles or disabilities
